STEM OPT Employment Update & Validation Reporting Form

This graphic outlines 5 steps for submitting a STEM OPT Report. First, a student on STEM logs onto their SEVP Portal. Then, they will need to review the data entered in the Portal. Thirdly, after reviewing the data input there, a student will complete the STEM OPT Reporting Form found on this webpage. In Step 4, the ISSO will process the submission within 10 business days. When the submission is processed, the ISSO will relay a student's report to the U.S. government via the SEVIS interface.

The multi-functional Google Form found on this page (click gold button below) must be used by former UNC Charlotte students who are currently participating in the 24-month STEM OPT Extension period. To learn the basics about STEM OPT reporting, see the section titled "Student Reporting Requirements While on STEM

 OPT" on this page

For validation reports, though students on STEM OPT will likely receive an email from SEVP instructing them to "Contact your school's designated school official to confirm your data is

accurate" -- this is not actually how the process works at UNC Charlotte in practice. Instead of contacting the ISSO directly, students must use the Google Form below to report the following to the ISSO:

-A new STEM employer or an employer change
-The end of employment or loss of employment (i.e. unemployment)
-Material Changes to the Form I-983, along with other changes
-Validation Reports due 6, 12, 18, and 24 months into STEM OPT

Generally, STEM employer updates must be reported within 10 days of a change occurring. All validation reports can be made up to 21 days before and 21 days after the due date, per your STEM EAD card. For example, if your STEM dates are 07/01/2022 - 06/30/2024, your:

  • 12 month report is due 7/01/2023, but...
  • ...It can be reported as early as June 10th, 2023.
  • ...And can be reported up to 21 days after that date, up to July 22nd, 2023.

Submitting a report early is best, but if you submit a validation report too early, you will be asked to re-submit at a more appropriate time. Note: OPT/STEM OPT students must report personal (physical, residential) address changes in the SEVP Portal.

Before clicking on the link to Reporting Form, please ensure that you have all your completed Form I-983(s), including validation report evaluation(s) (if needed). Most submissions will at least require a new Form I-983 to be uploaded.

How long will it take to receive my updated STEM I-20 and/or when will my report be made (if applicable) after I submit this request?

The processing time for this request, excluding shipping time (if applicable), is 10 business days. Note that holidays and weekends are not considered business days. For validation reports specifically, it can sometimes take several weeks for the report to reflect in the SEVP Portal after it has been completed.
